What’s new

• Added “Guides” to Settings. It used to sit inside About, which was a long way to go for something you need while using the app
• About now opens the official site (shimau.io)
• The privacy policy now opens in your own language. It used to open in Japanese whatever language you were using
• Contact is now just “Send feedback” in Settings, in one place

• When putting something away from the “+” button, boxes near the bottom of the list could not be chosen if you had many of them. The list now scrolls, so you can reach the last box

If you were on 3.0, here is what we fixed.

• After updating the app, photos and PDFs sometimes did not sync to iCloud, and were missing from backups too. We are sorry: you could have believed you had a backup when you did not
• A photo set as a box cover could disappear after updating the app
• On iPad, “Back up everything” and “Export data” sometimes did nothing when tapped
• Syncing could stay unfinished, or take a very long time. Dozens of items now finish in seconds
• Settings now has “Sync everything again”, for when something has not reached your other devices
• In mainland China, prices sometimes did not load and Pro could not be purchased. We are sorry

• iCloud sync and backup — nothing you have put away is lost when you change or break a device, and your iPhone and iPad hold the same things
• Lock with Face ID — Face ID or your device passcode is asked for when you open the app
• More themes — “Calm Blue” and “Mono” have been added

Shimau now supports iPad.

• On a wide screen the list and its contents sit side by side, so you can read through boxes, records and settings without going back and forth
• Narrow the window with Split View or Slide Over and you will not lose what you were reading
• You can now use an external keyboard
• On iPhone in landscape, text is kept at a comfortable reading width

You can now back up everything (Settings → Data).

• Photos, PDFs, boxes and sticky notes all go into a single file
• You can restore from that backup. Nothing you have now is removed

From your reports and requests

• Press and hold an item in the list to put it in a box. Until now you had to open it first. Thank you for asking
• Fixed the Chinese share sheet instructions, which named something that was not there. Sorry to anyone who gave up looking for it
• Fixed photos and PDFs added from the share sheet sometimes becoming unopenable after an app update
• Photos are now brought in at the same quality whichever way you add them
• Fixed bilibili links being saved as two items, and their summaries not appearing

Boxes look tidier too.

• More cover artwork, on background colours chosen to sit behind what is on them rather than compete with it
• A colour you pick yourself now stays put when you change theme

• Fixed TikTok share links briefly showing “TikTok - Make Your Day” as the title
• Notices about new versions now arrive sooner

• Fixed a bug where a YouTube link’s title would appear correctly at first, then change to “YouTube” with the summary replaced by the service’s own blurb. Thank you for reporting it
• While a title is being fetched, “Loading…” now appears. Previously a fragment of the URL such as “youtube.com/watch” was shown as the title until loading finished
• When a title cannot be found at all, the site name is shown instead of a URL fragment
• A title that has already loaded correctly is no longer replaced by a shorter name later on
• Titles and thumbnails now work for TikTok, RedNote, Bilibili, Douyin and more
• RedNote videos, Bilibili, Douyin, Niconico and Vimeo are now treated as videos
• Source names now follow your language
• Content that cannot be summarised no longer keeps loading forever, saving battery and data
• Retries after a failed load no longer continue indefinitely. You can still retry manually from the detail screen

• What you write alongside a photo is saved with it. Until now, choosing a photo threw away whatever you had typed (bug fix)
• The capture screen is simpler. The memo/link/photo switch is gone — add photos from “Add photos” below
• URLs written in your notes and records now open with a tap
• Addresses written without https://, like “example.com”, are recognized as links too
• While you are writing a memo, URLs are underlined. The button below lets you open the page, copy the URL, or save it as a link
• Splitting a photo into its own item now asks first, because it cannot be undone
• PDFs and images shared from the Files app are saved properly. Until now, nothing was saved at all sometimes (bug fix)
• PDF covers show up in lists. Until now, they sometimes stayed blank (bug fix)
• The screen you see after saving from the share menu has been rebuilt — what you saved is shown large
• The share menu now uses the display language you chose in the app. Until now, it followed your device’s language
• iOS 15 or later is now required

• When a new version is released, we tell you the next time you open the app. No need to check the App Store
• Boxes can be reordered with “Move to top”, so the ones you use most stay at the top
• The list and home now share the same order. Leave it alone and it stays in most-recently-used order
• In the capture screen, you can now pick “Link” before typing anything (it was selected but never looked selected)
• Sharing the same link twice no longer creates a duplicate. We tell you how many were skipped
• Peeling off the last sticky note now feels the same as it does on home

• To-dos now live on one wall at home. You are no longer asked to pick a box
• Tap a to-do to rewrite it. Long-press for: move to top, colour, remind me, throw away
• The paper grows and shrinks to fit what you wrote. To-dos show up in search
• You can now write straight into a box, without opening another screen
• Notes are readable from the list. To-dos keep their checklist shape
• A note’s title is optional now. Leave it out and one is made from the text
• “Move to top” inside a box, so older things don’t stay buried
• Save the same link twice and we’ll point you to the one you already have
• Added a Trash. Deleted things stay for 30 days and can be restored anytime (Settings)
• Rename a box, change its cover, or throw the whole box away
• Cards now pack together so more of them fit on screen (switch back in Settings)
• Clear every to-do and confetti celebrates with you
• Tap outside a field to dismiss the keyboard

• Fixed the input being hidden behind the keyboard when adding a to-do or editing tags
• Fixed stat labels being cut off on smaller screens
• Fixed boxes created from Home not appearing in the box list
• Adding a to-do from Home now uses the same input (with paper colors) as inside a box
• You can now pick a cover (theme art, photo, or color + emoji) right when creating a box

• A complete visual redesign: colors, typography, and illustrations, all refreshed
• Themes! Switch between “Cozy” and “Lovely Pink”. More themes are in the works — you can ask to be notified when they arrive
• New: Journal — log your mood and a line a day, then look back with history, calendar, and stats (with a friendly bear or bunny)
• Memos can now have tags and boxes, plus optional “Tag with AI” that only runs when you tap it
• Better reminders: set one from anywhere on items and memos, and choose how it alerts you (quiet / standard / strong)
• Checklist memos now open in a focused to-do mode for ticking things off
• Improved pinning: pins are visible in lists and update instantly everywhere
• Hidden items are now organized by box
• A friendlier start on My Page, plus many polish and stability improvements
